A 2026 article in Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research, and Practice, a journal of the American Psychological Association, analyses 1,678 cases in which a child says he or she remembers a previous life and a deceased person has been identified with whom the account would fit. It is signed by Saeedeh Sadeghi, Marieta Pehlivanova and P. J. Cozzolino (DOI 10.1037/cns0000493). It is not news from this week: the unit that produced it announced it on 21 August 2026, and most of the media coverage arrived in October.

The variable they measure is the «transition interval»: the time between that person’s death and the child’s birth. The result is a calendar regularity: the more unexpected the death, the shorter the interval. According to the unit’s own announcement, medians fall by 40 % to 45 % between the least and the most unexpected deaths; the summary of the preprint, cited in the source report, speaks of about 21 months versus about 12.

The effect size is small. Unexpectedness would explain between 2 % and 3 % of the variation in the interval, which is equivalent, by our own calculation, to a correlation of between 0.14 and 0.17. The authors do not hide it: what is striking, they say, is not the strength of the link, but that it is still there when tested on many more cases.

Each block separates three layers: what is on record in the authors’ primary source, what we have seen only in derived reports, and what is objection or editorial interpretation. We could not read the full text of the study (restricted access), so we did not see its tables, confidence intervals or models. The figures in this block come from the unit’s announcement and from matching reports. The final judgment belongs to the reader.

Quién mide, y con qué materialWho measures, and with what material

The three signatories belong to the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia, within its School of Medicine. That unit grew out of the work of Ian Stevenson (1918–2007), a psychiatrist who chaired the university’s psychiatry department between 1957 and 1967 and published Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation in 1966. The money came from Chester Carlson (1906–1968), the inventor of xerography, whose support let Stevenson set up a separate division and who is credited with a one-million-dollar bequest to the university. We could not confirm the exact founding date of the unit: what is certain is that it dates from the late 1960s.

The material is its own archive: 2,254 cases gathered since then, of which 74 % were judged to match the previous life of another person. From there come the 1,678 of the analysis, those in which the deceased person was identified. It is not a random sample or an external replication: those who analyse the data are the heirs of those who collected it. The authors state that the data are observational and that they remain agnostic about the mechanism.

Documented: authors and archive belong to the same unit, and the article was published in an APA journal. Not established: an independent evaluation of its data. That the data and code are open, according to the authors, counts in their favour because it lets outside teams reanalyse them; we have not found such a reanalysis so far.

Nor is this the first time this archive has produced a finding about the interval. A 1988 study by Chadha and Stevenson, with 326 cases, had already examined it, and according to one report its authors wrote: «We ourselves cannot think of any plausible normal hypothesis to account for our data on the intermission period». The classic criticisms of Stevenson still stand: Paul Edwards spoke of «big holes» in his cases, Leonard Angel of leading questions, Terence Hines of childhood fabulation not ruled out, and Robert Baker of cryptomnesia and confabulation.

Cómo se mide el tiempo entre una muerte y un nacimientoHow to measure the time between a death and a birth

The design is simple and, precisely for that reason, delicate. A case enters the analysis only if someone has identified a deceased person to whom the child’s account relates. The time between that person’s death and the birth is calculated. The «unexpectedness» of that death is scored. And it is checked whether one variable predicts the other.

The unit says «multiple bias checks» were run and that the association holds when controlling for the quality of verification and family belief in reincarnation. One report lists five sources of bias: quality of verification, memory contamination, prior relationships between families, social status and beliefs about reincarnation. Unexpectedness turns out to be the strongest predictor in the multiple regression, ahead of the distinction between natural and non-natural death.

There is one detail that struck the researchers themselves. According to reports, the effect would be stronger in families from religions that do not teach reincarnation. If true, it would run against the most obvious objection, that the accounts simply reflect what each culture expects. But we could not check the figures for that subgroup, and we have not seen confidence intervals or the test that would tell a real difference from random variation.

To our surprise, the relationship was still there when we tested it in a much larger number of cases. To our surprise, the relationship was still there when we tested it in a much larger number of cases.

◐ LO QUE NO HEMOS PODIDO COMPROBAR◐ WHAT WE COULD NOT VERIFY

We have not verified the size of the main analysis (a figure of 1,075 cases appears in only one report), the sizes of the subgroups by family belief, whether the unexpectedness score was assigned blind to the interval, or whether the analysis was preregistered. The overall median of about 16 months is attributed in one report to the cases with available dates, which would be fewer than the 1,678.

Faced with a small pattern, the useful question is what else could produce it. None of the explanations that follow has been proven, but none has been ruled out by what we have seen, and several are mentioned by the very press that covered the study.

OBJECIONES PLAUSIBLES · NO REFUTACIONESPLAUSIBLE OBJECTIONS · NOT REFUTATIONS
  • Identificación a posteriori. After-the-fact identification. Cases enter only if the «previous person» is found, and that happens after the child speaks, in a setting that already knows or discusses the death.
Intervals shorter than a gestation. With medians of 12 months there will be cases under nine: the child would have been conceived before the death.
A subjective variable. «Unexpectedness» is scored by the team; it is not recorded whether this was done without knowing the interval.
Self-selection. Cases arrived through non-systematic channels, and violent deaths are talked about more and investigated better.
  • Creencia mal medida. Belief poorly measured. Family religion is a poor proxy for personal belief.
Multiple comparisons. We do not know how many relationships were tested before this one was published.

The first deserves a pause. A recent, tragic and widely discussed death in an area is more likely to be «found» as a match for a child’s account. If so, the relationship between «unexpected» and «short interval» would arise from the way cases are identified, with no exotic mechanism at all. The second points in the same direction, because an interval of under nine months implies conception before the death, and the field’s own literature treats it as a problem; we have not, however, opened that discussion directly.

◐ LA PARTE QUE ES INTERPRETACIÓN◐ THE PART THAT IS INTERPRETATION

That identification bias alone explains the pattern is a hypothesis of ours, not a result. The authors controlled for some of these sources, and for the rest we could not check whether they did. One report adds that the work received support from foundations linked to research on consciousness and anomalous phenomena; we could not confirm this in a primary source, and even if confirmed it would not invalidate the study, it is simply worth knowing.

✦ ✦ ✦

De «no se explica fácilmente» a «la ciencia no puede explicarlo»From «not easily explained» to «science cannot explain it»

The authors’ wording is cautious. Their unit’s announcement speaks of a pattern «not fully explained by existing psychosocial theories», and the preprint, according to the source report, of a phenomenon «not easily explained by existing psychosocial frameworks». It is their own conclusion about their own archive, with no independent evaluation that we have located.

In much of the coverage that wording has turned into another. «A pattern that science still cannot explain» does not say the same as «a group has not found a conventional explanation»: the first asserts a gap in knowledge, the second describes the state of one particular team. And «confirmed» is not the word either: the data are an observational association.

There is also an echo effect. The reports we reviewed start from the same announcement by the unit and the same article, so their number does not amount to independent corroboration. Nor have we found an external, peer-reviewed critical assessment; our not finding one does not prove none exists.

⚠ HECHO FRENTE A TITULAR⚠ FACT VERSUS HEADLINE

On record: a small, statistically significant association within one specific archive, described by its own authors as not fully explained by psychosocial theories. Not on record: that it is a systematic phenomenon distinct from an artefact of how cases are identified and selected, or that it proves anything about consciousness or life after death.

A pattern without a mechanism is neither a solved mystery nor a proof: it is a question with data.

Once the layers are separated, what remains is smaller than the headline and more interesting than reflex scepticism. A real regularity in specific data, modest, reproducible in principle thanks to open data, and of uncertain origin. Neither proof of a previous life nor, yet, the plain echo of how coincidences are sought.

What would an independent reanalysis of the open data show, with unexpectedness scored blind? Would the same pattern appear in an archive gathered in another way, without the after-the-fact search for the deceased person? And why is a finding so appealing that, even if true, explains only two or three per cent?
