Cuatro nombres en seis añosFour names in six years
Poltergeist opened on 4 June 1982. Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, it cost $10.7 million and grossed $121.7 million, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of that year. Two sequels followed, in 1986 and 1988, and with them a label that stuck to the franchise: the curse.
The legend fits in a list. Dominique Dunne, the eldest sister in the first film, was murdered in 1982. Julian Beck, the unsettling Reverend Kane of the second, died in 1985. Will Sampson, the shaman Taylor, in 1987. And Heather O’Rourke, the girl of the famous «they’re here», in 1988, aged twelve. Four performers from the franchise dead between 1982 and 1988: the arithmetic of a perfect headline.
The list is real. What is rarely told is what happened to each of them and what, if anything, the filming had to do with it.
Each block separates three layers: what is recorded in documented sources, what is told without verifiable backing, and what is editorial interpretation. Several widely repeated claims about the shoot, among them the clown that nearly choked a child, circulate as facts and do not survive scrutiny. Each case is flagged. The final judgment belongs to the reader.
Dominique Dunne: una muerte que no pertenece al rodajeDominique Dunne: a death that does not belong to the shoot
Dominique Dunne was 22 and had played Dana, the eldest of the Freeling children. On 30 October 1982, almost five months after the premiere, her ex-boyfriend John Thomas Sweeney strangled her at her home in West Hollywood. She died on 4 November, when life support was withdrawn. Sweeney, a sous-chef at the restaurant Ma Maison, had had a relationship with her marked, as documented in the case, by jealousy, possessiveness and physical violence. Dunne had just ended it.
Judge Burton S. Katz excluded the testimony of a former partner of Sweeney about ten earlier assaults, and those of Dunne’s mother and friends about the abuse, and the defence succeeded in having the first-degree murder charge dropped. Sweeney was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault and sentenced to six and a half years in prison, and was released on parole in September 1986. Dominique’s father, the writer Dominick Dunne, recounted the proceedings in Justice: A Father’s Account of the Trial of his Daughter’s Killer, published in Vanity Fair in March 1984.
Documented: Dunne was killed by a specific person, with a history of violence against her, for reasons that have nothing to do with the film. There is no supernatural element in the case and no connection to the shoot. Placing this crime on the «curse» list is a misclassification, and also a way of turning a crime with a culprit into a fate with none.
Julian Beck y Will Sampson: dos enfermos en el mismo repartoJulian Beck and Will Sampson: two sick men in the same cast
Julian Beck co-founded the Living Theatre in 1947 with his wife Judith Malina, an experimental theatre company inspired by Antonin Artaud and his Theatre of Cruelty, and directed it until his death. In late 1983 he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He shot Poltergeist II: The Other Side, in which he played the Reverend Henry Kane, with the illness already declared, and died on 14 September 1985 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, aged 60. The film was released in 1986, after his death.
Will Sampson was best known as Chief Bromden in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), a role he reached after being discovered on the rodeo circuit. In Poltergeist II he played the shaman Taylor. He suffered from scleroderma, a chronic, degenerative disease that affected his heart, lungs and skin, and took him from roughly 270 pounds to roughly 150. He underwent a heart-lung transplant at Houston Methodist Hospital and died on 3 June 1987, in Houston, aged 53, of post-operative kidney failure.
Neither a cancer diagnosed in 1983 nor chronic scleroderma is contracted on a film shoot. Beck and Sampson both appear only in the second film, and both died of illnesses that were already under way. That they died around that project does not make them victims of it: it makes them two gravely ill actors who kept working as long as they could.
Heather O’Rourke: el expediente que su familia pide cerrarHeather O’Rourke: the file her family asks us to close
Heather O’Rourke was born on 27 December 1975 in San Diego and played Carol Anne in all three films. The girl who whispered to a television set left on became the face of the franchise and, over the years, the perfect victim of the myth. She died on 1 February 1988, aged twelve.
According to her documented biography, in 1987 she contracted giardiasis from her home’s well water. She was later diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and treated with cortisone injections during the shooting of Poltergeist III; the facial swelling they caused worried her. On 31 January 1988 she had flu-like symptoms. The next day she collapsed at home. She suffered a first cardiac arrest on the way to Community Hospital in El Cajon and, after emergency surgery at Children’s Hospital in San Diego, a second one in the recovery room. She died there.
The official cause was congenital stenosis of the intestine complicated by septic shock. Dr. Daniel Hollander, of the University of California, Irvine medical center, called the case «distinctly unusual» because the girl had shown no earlier symptoms of the defect, though he acknowledged that an infection can cause a sudden bowel rupture without warning. Her mother filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the doctors. Poltergeist III was released on 10 June 1988, four months later.
It has been repeated that she died of a misdiagnosis. It is on record that she received a Crohn’s diagnosis before dying and that the final cause was different, a congenital stenosis; it is also on record that her family sued the doctors. Whether there was negligence is an allegation by one party whose outcome this file could not verify. What appears in no source reviewed is any link between her illness and the shoot, the script or the skeletons.
I mean, come on. That’s so ridiculous.»In 2026 the documentary Heather O’Rourke: She Was Here was released, available on digital platforms from 24 February. In it, her sister Tammy talks about the theories surrounding the girl’s death: «everyone thinks they know better than our mum, or better than us». Craig T. Nelson, the Freeling father in the franchise, dismisses the idea with a question: «What curse? I mean, come on. That’s so ridiculous.»
Everyone thinks they know better than our mum, or better than us. Everyone thinks they know better than our mum, or better than us. The one who died was a child, and those who still read the list are her family.
Williams lo contó así, según recogió la prensa especializada: «I always assumed that the skeletons were made by the prop department. A few years later, I ran into one of the special effects guys…». Here the legend is right, and that is why it works. In the swimming-pool scene, when Diane Freeling (JoBeth Williams) falls into a pit of mud and corpses, the skeletons floating around her were real human remains. Williams told it this way, as reported by the specialist press: «I always assumed that the skeletons were made by the prop department. A few years later, I ran into one of the special effects guys…». In other words, she did not learn it until years later, when someone from the effects crew told her.
The reason, according to Craig Reardon, the film’s makeup artist, was financial: buying real skeletons from medical and biological suppliers was cheaper than manufacturing replicas. They were bleached skeletons of the kind used in classrooms, not recent remains, and the makeup department aged them to look like decomposing bodies. The same source adds that Hollywood had been using authentic skeletons for decades and that the scene took five days to shoot.
It is not recorded where those skeletons originally came from or whose they were in life: it is a legitimate, and uncomfortable, question about the trade in human remains at the time, which no source reviewed answers. What is on record is that they were skeletons and not corpses, and that their use was common in the industry. That «the spirits were angry» is a later reading with no proof: in the sources reviewed, no crew member attributes any phenomenon to that scene.
There is also an irony the myth exploits without knowing it. The film’s plot is that of a housing development built on a cemetery whose developers moved the headstones but not the bodies: the dead demand what they are owed. When it emerged that the shoot had used real bones, the legend already had its script: the living had once again disturbed the dead.
Among the stories of the shoot, the clown is the most repeated. During one take, the doll’s mechanical arms are said to have clamped around the neck of the child actor Oliver Robins, who was about ten, and Spielberg, convinced he was acting, is said to have stepped in only when he saw the boy turning purple, tearing the doll off him. It is a film scene inside the film, and several publications tell it as fact.
Dice: «You know what’s funny is I don’t remember that». Y añade: «My understanding is the clown doll’s arm caught around my neck. I guess I put it out of my mind because I can’t even remember what happened». Here it pays to slow down. The most direct source there is, Robins himself, does not confirm it in an interview published in 2013. He says: «You know what’s funny is I don’t remember that». He explains that the scene was shot in a few hours with the camera inverted and that he acted backwards so that on screen the arm seemed to coil around his neck. And he adds: «My understanding is the clown doll’s arm caught around my neck. I guess I put it out of my mind because I can’t even remember what happened». What he knows, he knows by hearsay; of his own experience he remembers nothing.
Robins dejó la actuación después de 1986, regresó al cine como guionista y director, y escribió y dirigió su primer largometraje en 2000.Documented: the scene exists, it was shot with a camera trick, and Robins himself knows it, at most, by hearsay. Without first-hand confirmation: that the doll truly choked him or that Spielberg had to rescue him. It is an anecdote that illustrates how a shooting incident, real or not, gets filed as «proof» that the film was dangerous. Robins left acting after 1986, returned to film as a writer and director, and wrote and directed his first feature in 2000.
True Hollywood Story titulado Curse of Poltergeist.A curse needs three ingredients: a list, a story and an audience. The list exists: four deaths. The story had been written by the film itself: disturbed dead demanding something of the living. The audience was supplied by the headlines. The sober version of the myth explains that it arose from the deaths of two young actors between the first and the third film, and that it took television form in 2002 with an episode of E! True Hollywood Story titled Curse of Poltergeist.
A cold analysis breaks the list apart. Four people, four causes with no common link: a homicide, a cancer, an autoimmune disease with a failed transplant, a congenital intestinal obstruction. Two appear only in the second film, one only in the first and one in all three. Everyone else involved in the three productions is left out, and they went on with their lives: Oliver Robins, the boy with the clown, is alive and works in film; Craig T. Nelson rejects the idea in public. And each death is tied after the fact to some detail of the shoot. It is the same mechanism that finds faces in clouds: confirmation bias and apophenia.
The set did not help a clean story either. Spielberg was under contract to Universal for E.T. and could not direct, but he was often present, and went so far as to state that Hooper «isn’t… a take-charge sort of guy» and that, if a question got no immediate answer, he stepped in (Los Angeles Times, 23 May 1982). The directors’ guild investigated whether Hooper had been disparaged and the arbitration sided with him. A disputed authorship leaves a void, and legend fills voids.
The curse was the most convenient explanation: it demands no culprits, no diagnoses, no hospitals. It only demands a television left on.
That the myth is explained by confirmation bias and by the narrative force of the film itself is an editorial reading, reasonable but not provable. What is on record is the opposite of what the legend claims: none of the four deaths has a common cause or one linked to the shoot.
Once the layers are separated, what remains is a harder file than the legend. A crime with a perpetrator, convicted and released. A cancer and a chronic illness that were already there. A twelve-year-old girl dead of an intestinal defect no one caught in time. And a single truly macabre detail of the shoot, the real bones, which killed no one. None of these needs a spirit.
Why is it easier to believe a film was cursed than to accept that the cast of a franchise, watched over six years, contains deaths? What is gained by turning a crime of gender violence into a chapter of mystery? And what does the horror industry owe the families the myth still points at?
Part of this file is interpretation: the analysis of how the myth is manufactured and the reading of the real bones as a narrative mold are editorial judgments, not facts. Literal quotes come from the sources consulted and are kept in English. The judgment is the reader’s.
