El Leonardo de las fuentes y el Leonardo de las novelasThe Leonardo of the sources and the Leonardo of the novels

History hands us some figures and popular culture manufactures others. Leonardo da Vinci is both at once. On one side stands the documented man: the illegitimate son of a notary, born in 1452 near Vinci, trained in Verrocchio’s Florentine workshop, dead in 1519 in France with thousands of pages of private notes behind him. On the other, the Leonardo of fiction: grand master of secret societies, keeper of a hidden bloodline, author of encrypted messages in The Last Supper. That second Leonardo sells millions of copies. The first is harder to read, and more unsettling.

The novelistic version has a traceable origin. The idea of a Leonardo who was «grand master of the Priory of Sion» comes from the so-called Dossiers secrets, a documentary construction deposited at the French National Library in the 1960s and later dismantled as a fabrication. From there it passed into the pseudo-historical literature of the 1980s and, from there, into the 2003 bestseller. There is not a single Leonardo manuscript, nor a single source from his own time, that supports that chain.

Each block separates three layers: what is recorded in sources and manuscripts, what specialists dispute, and what is legend. Several widely repeated claims about Leonardo —his «clandestine» work, his anatomical precision «centuries ahead», his plans to «flood enemy cities»— do not survive comparison with the sources as they circulate. Each case is flagged. The final judgment belongs to the reader.

Leonardo was left-handed and filled his notebooks with mirror writing: right to left, with reversed letters, readable only with a mirror. Roughly seven thousand pages survive, and one single writing habit has fed centuries of suspicion. A cipher? Concealed heresy? A secret the author meant to protect from the Church?

The least mysterious explanation is also the most solid. A left-hander writing left to right with wet ink drags the hand across what has just been written and smudges it; writing backwards avoids the smear. That a mirror suffices to read it is, besides, the worst argument for encryption: a key broken by holding the page up to a piece of glass protects nothing. And a considerable part of those notes were working material for treatises Leonardo planned to publish, which sits badly with the idea of an author determined to hide his work.

That mirror writing was also a precaution against prying eyes is a reasonable hypothesis, but it is not documented: Leonardo left no note saying so. The habit is on record; the motive is inference.

Ingeniero, músico, botánico… y pintorEngineer, musician, botanist… and painter

Leonardo was not merely a painter with hobbies. His famous letter of introduction to Ludovico Sforza, around 1482, lists his abilities as a military engineer first and leaves painting and sculpture for the end. Hence the oft-repeated idea that he «did not consider himself primarily a painter». Leonardo himself contradicts it elsewhere: in his writings he argued forcefully that painting was superior to sculpture, poetry and music. The letter was a résumé addressed to a duke in a state of permanent war, not a statement of identity.

The rest is on record. He played the lira da braccio: Vasari relates that he arrived in Milan with a silver lyre he had built himself, shaped like a horse’s skull. He studied botany, hydraulics, optics, geology and the flight of birds. He designed ornithopters and a pyramidal parachute; none of his flying machines took off in his lifetime, though modern reconstructions of the parachute have been made to work. As for his supposed career as a composer, no piece survives that can be attributed to him with certainty: the claim that he «composed» is, for now, more tradition than fact.

Beneath the surface of the Mona Lisa there is more than meets the eye, and that is science, not legend. In 2004, more than sixteen hundred multispectral images of the painting were taken. Their later analysis, published by the scientist Pascal Cotte and the physicist Lionel Simonot, identified a charcoal underdrawing transferred with the spolvero technique —charcoal dust pounced through a perforated cartoon— and details suggesting changes made during execution, among them what may be a hairpin beside the head.

Here it pays to slow down. The technique used is multispectral imaging, not simply «X-rays», and the most striking conclusions —that a different portrait, with another pose or another woman, lies hidden beneath the final version— are interpretations by Cotte that many art historians do not share. Martin Kemp, one of the leading Leonardo specialists, has argued that what is observed is the trace of a long process of revision: Leonardo worked on the portrait for years, perhaps to the end of his life, and a painting like that shows layers because it was thought and re-thought.

A painting its author never wished to hand over is, almost by definition, a painting with layers: the mystery lies not beneath the paint but in the obstinacy of the man who kept touching it for years.

⚠ HECHO FRENTE A HIPÓTESIS⚠ FACT VERSUS HYPOTHESIS

Documented: the underdrawing and the compositional changes. Disputed hypothesis: that a complete second portrait lies beneath. Leonardo’s reluctance to consider the painting finished is attested by sources of the period; its link to «a secret» is a later reading.

In April 1476, when Leonardo was twenty-four, an anonymous denunciation appeared in Florence, dropped into one of the public letterboxes known as tamburi or «holes of truth». It accused Jacopo Saltarelli, a seventeen-year-old goldsmith’s apprentice, of sodomy, and named three other men: a goldsmith, a doublet-maker and the young Leonardo Tornabuoni, from a family tied to the Medici. The fourth was Leonardo da Vinci. In Florence sodomy was prosecuted by a dedicated magistracy, the Officers of the Night.

No hubo condena. The outcome is in the record: all four were «acquitted on condition of being denounced again», that is, released pending further evidence, with a later summons in June. There was no conviction. Here the popular account overreaches on three points. First, «falsely accused» is a reading, not a verdict: the file declared no one innocent or guilty; it simply went nowhere. Second, «it almost cost him his life» exaggerates: the maximum penalty existed in theory, but studies of Florence at the time indicate that most cases ended in fines or dismissals. Third, and most important, that the episode made him secretive and led him to hide his findings is a biographical hypothesis with no Leonardo note to support it.

◐ LO QUE NO SABEMOS◐ WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW

Who filed the denunciation, why, and whether it was tied to any workshop rivalry remains unknown. Leonardo’s later discretion is a character trait compatible with many explanations, and none is proven.

La búsqueda del alma con bisturí y ceraThe search for the soul with scalpel and wax

Leonardo dissected corpses, and did so with a persistence few artists of his time matched. According to the cleric Antonio de Beatis, who visited him in 1517, Leonardo himself said he had dissected more than thirty bodies of men and women of all ages. His drawings and notes attest it too: those of a hundred-year-old man whose death he witnessed in a Florentine hospital, and of a child; of the heart, the fetus, the spine, the muscles. He did not work in a clandestine crypt: the dissection of corpses, above all of executed criminals and hospital deaths, was practised at the time, with permits and within the framework of universities and hospitals, such as Santa Maria Nuova in Florence.

No source proves that Leonardo paid grave robbers or operated in «dark cellars» outside the law. It is a detail of narrative atmosphere. What is on record points the other way in tone: in his notes he admits how wretched it was to spend nights in the company of quartered and flayed bodies. One tradition also holds that in Rome, around 1515–1516, he was denounced and lost access to the hospital where he dissected; it is a late report of debatable solidity.

What is disturbing —and documented— is what for he opened bodies. Leonardo inherited from medieval medicine the idea that the soul had a physical seat in the brain, specifically the senso comune, the point where all sensations converge. He placed it in the middle ventricle. Around 1508 he injected hot wax into the ventricles of an ox brain, waited for it to harden and removed the tissue to obtain an internal cast: a technique with no known precedent, which still astonishes for its ingenuity. The search for the soul with scalpel and wax is, simply, exactly as the legend tells it.

The supposed anatomical precision «that would take centuries to match» calls for more rigor. Some of his intuitions are extraordinary: he described the turbulent flow that forms behind the aortic valve and its role in closing the valve, and modern fluid-dynamics studies have corroborated the essentials of that description. But he did not grasp the circulation of the blood —that would come with William Harvey in 1628— and, above all, his notebooks were never published: they remained scattered and largely unknown for centuries. A precision no one could read did not advance medicine; it advanced Leonardo.

✦ ✦ ✦

El hombre que liberaba pájarosThe man who freed birds

The same man who opened corpses has an opposite image in the sources. Vasari relates that when he passed stalls where caged birds were sold, he bought them and set them free. It is a biographer’s anecdote, not an archival fact, but it is the most cited proof of his compassionate character. The same goes for vegetarianism: the main argument is a 1515 letter from the Florentine traveller Andrea Corsali, who compares the gentleness of Hindus who eat nothing with blood to «our Leonardo da Vinci». It is an indirect allusion with no proof of personal acquaintance; and his surviving shopping lists sometimes include meat, though it could have been for his household. That he was vegetarian is possible; it is not demonstrated.

The tension with his experimental side is real, and here the notes do speak. Around 1487 Leonardo described what is considered the first known pithing of a frog: on piercing its spinal cord the animal died instantly, even though it had survived without other organs, from which he concluded that the cord was essential to life. It is an experiment on a living animal, and a correct scientific result. What the sources reviewed do not allow us to assert is that his work abounded in the «brutal dissections of living animals to study the pulse and brain functions» that the popular account describes: the frog case is attested; the rest, in the form in which it is usually told, could not be verified.

◐ UNA FRASE QUE NO ES SUYA◐ A QUOTE THAT IS NOT HIS

A widely circulated quote credits Leonardo with the prophecy that a day would come when the killing of an animal would be judged like the killing of a man. It does not appear in his notebooks: it comes from the historical novel Dmitry Merezhkovsky devoted to Leonardo in 1901. It is an example of how fiction ends up cited as archive.

✦ ✦ ✦

Máquinas en papel, escrúpulos en privadoMachines on paper, scruples in private

There is a Leonardo who contradicts the image of the gentle sage, and it is not a legend. Around 1482 he offered himself to Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, as a military engineer; in 1502 he entered the service of Cesare Borgia as «architect and general engineer», and from that period comes his plan of the city of Imola, a work of cartography of unusual precision for the time. His notebooks are full of multi-projectile artillery, giant crossbows, portable bridges, a crank-driven armoured vehicle and chariots with rotating scythes.

Here the legend mixes things again. The machines are real on paper; most were not built in his time, and no wartime use of any of them is recorded. In the armoured vehicle, moreover, the drawing has a mechanical flaw: the gears would turn the wheels in opposite directions. Some maintain Leonardo introduced it on purpose so the design would be useless in enemy hands. It is an attractive hypothesis with no proof: a design error cannot tell carelessness from sabotage.

Ninguno era «ofensivo contra ciudades» en el sentido que sugiere el relato.«Plans to flood enemy cities» is attributed to Borgia and Sforza, and that is not accurate. Leonardo’s war-related hydraulic projects are of another kind and for other clients: the diversion of the River Arno to deprive Pisa of water, devised for the Florentine Republic, on which Machiavelli also worked and which ended in failure, and a defensive plan for Venice, around 1500, that contemplated flooding the Isonzo valley against a possible Ottoman invasion. Neither was «offensive against cities» in the sense the account suggests.

The moral question remains, and there we do have documents. Leonardo called war pazzia bestialissima, «most bestial madness», and in his notes he refused to divulge his method of remaining underwater because of the wickedness of men, who would use it to commit assassinations at the bottom of the sea (free translation). There is no «prioritizing military effectiveness over morality»: there is a man who worked for those who paid and who, in private, expressed horror at what his ingenuity might enable. Both things are true at once.

✦ ✦ ✦

Perspectiva, proporción y la tentación del códigoPerspective, proportion and the temptation of the code

The other vein of mystery is geometric messages. In The Last Supper, finished around 1498 in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Leonardo built the space with single-point linear perspective, its vanishing point at Christ’s right temple: all the lines of the ceiling and walls converge on it, which is why the eye always ends on the central figure. The apostles are grouped in four trios and there are three windows in the background. This geometric discipline is documented and is what makes the painting a masterpiece of composition.

The leap to «messages» is another matter. Numerological readings have been proposed (the three, the twelve), astrological and even musical ones: in 2007 an Italian musician, Giovanni Maria Pala, claimed that by laying a musical staff over the painting, the loaves and hands formed a melody. These are after-the-fact interpretations that find patterns because they seek them, with no Leonardo note to back them. The same goes for the supposed «golden ratio» in the Mona Lisa. Leonardo did illustrate the regular polyhedra in his friend Luca Pacioli’s treatise De divina proportione (1509), and his Vitruvian Man does apply proportions described by Vitruvius; but that geometry is open, published and explained, the opposite of a secret code.

Leonardo’s geometry hides nothing: what it hides is the discipline of a man who wanted the eye to obey the lines.

◐ SOBRE LA FIGURA JUNTO A CRISTO◐ ON THE FIGURE BESIDE CHRIST

The figure to Christ’s right, with soft features and no beard, is an iconographic convention for representing John, the youngest disciple. That it is really Mary Magdalene is a thesis of recent fiction, with no backing in fifteenth-century sources or in documents about the commission.

What remains is a Leonardo who needs no conspiracies. A left-hander who wrote backwards for convenience, a painter who would not let go of his paintings, an anatomist who sought the soul with hot wax, an engineer who designed war machines and noted his horror of war. All of it is in the manuscripts. What popular culture added —secret societies, stolen corpses, floods on Borgia’s payroll— says more about us than about him: we prefer a genius with a secret to a genius who left everything in writing and still refuses to be understood.

Why is it easier for us to believe he was hiding something than to accept that he was not? What is lost when an archive of hundreds of thousands of words is reduced to a disturbing anecdote? And how many of the notebooks that do not survive would have refuted, or confirmed, what we now take as said?
