Five women murdered in ten weeks, within less than a kilometer of each other. Letters the Metropolitan Police itself suspected, even at the time, were the work of a journalist rather than the killer. A message on a wall a police commissioner ordered erased before it was photographed. And, a hundred and thirty years later, a DNA study that promised to close the case and that the scientific community called "unacceptable science." This file gathers what is actually known — and how much, honestly, still isn't.

In 1888, Whitechapel was one of the poorest and most densely populated districts of London's East End: overcrowded tenements, widespread alcoholism, and a street-prostitution economy that sustained thousands of women with no real alternative means of subsistence. It was in that district, between 31 August and 9 November 1888, that the five murders occurred which police investigation and later historiography would come to recognize as the "canonical group" attributed to a single unidentified perpetrator, dubbed by the press Jack the Ripper.

The "canonical five" designation was neither arbitrary nor immediate: it was fixed years after the events by Sir Melville Macnaghten himself, then Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, in an internal 1894 memorandum. Before and after those five deaths, other murders of women occurred in the same area that were also attributed to the Ripper at the time, but which most modern researchers consider to be of different or inconclusive authorship — a nuance rarely mentioned in popular accounts of the case, which tend to treat the number "five" as fixed from the very beginning.

Mary Ann Nichols was found murdered on 31 August; Annie Chapman on 8 September. The night of 30 September saw what the press of the time dubbed the "double event": Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were murdered less than an hour apart, at two different locations in the East End, which led to speculation — never confirmed — that the killer was interrupted during the first crime before completing his mutilation ritual, and made up for that frustration in the second. The last of the five, Mary Jane Kelly, was found on 9 November inside her own rented room, in the most brutal killing of the set: unlike the other four victims, murdered in the street, Kelly was attacked in an enclosed, private space, which gave the killer time for extensive mutilation of the body.

Popular accounts usually present "the canonical five" as an objective fact from day one of the investigation. It is, in reality, a retrospective classification, fixed by a police official six years after the crimes, precisely to rule out another suspect (Thomas Cutbush) who had been mistakenly linked to the case in the press of the time.

"Dear Boss", "Saucy Jacky" y el riñón que llegó por correo"Dear Boss," "Saucy Jacky," and the kidney that arrived by post

Amo mi trabajo y quiero volver a empezar." The very name "Jack the Ripper" comes from a letter dated 25 September 1888 and received by the Central News Agency on the 27th, signed "Jack the Ripper": "I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet [...] I love my work and want to start again." Much of the case's research community — the so-called "Ripperologists" — has long suspected that this letter, known as "Dear Boss," was actually invented by a journalist at the news agency itself to feed public morbid curiosity and sell more papers, not an authentic document from the killer. The police of the time did not rule out that possibility either.

The "Saucy Jacky" postcard, postmarked 1 October, explicitly referenced the "double event" of Stride and Eddowes that had occurred just hours before it was sent: "have not the time to get ears for police." And on 16 October, George Lusk, chairman of Whitechapel's local vigilance committee, received a small package containing half a preserved human kidney in alcohol and a letter — the so-called "From Hell" letter — written in deliberately crude spelling: "I send you half the Kidne I took from one woman prasarved it for you tother piece I fried and ate it was very nise." A surgeon consulted by police, Dr. Thomas Openshaw, examined the kidney and determined it was human and consistent with that of a middle-aged woman, but could not conclusively confirm it belonged to Catherine Eddowes, whose left kidney the killer had removed.

Of the several letters attributed to the Ripper, most case historians believe many — probably including "Dear Boss" itself, the origin of the nickname — were forgeries by journalists or members of the public exploiting the panic. The "From Hell" letter, because of the physical evidence accompanying it — an actual human kidney — is the one given the most credibility as a possible genuine communication from the killer, though no conclusive forensic proof confirms this either.

At 2:55am on 30 September 1888, PC Alfred Long found a fragment of Catherine Eddowes's bloodstained apron at the entrance of a Goulston Street tenement block, and just above it, written in chalk on the wall, a sentence transcribed in several slightly different ways depending on which police source is consulted: something close to "The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing." Police at the time interpreted the message as a semi-literate attack on the district's Jewish population.

What turned that graffito into one of the case's biggest controversies wasn't so much its content as what happened next: Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Charles Warren, fearing the message would spark antisemitic riots in a district with a large immigrant Jewish population, personally ordered it erased before dawn, before it could be photographed. Only handwritten transcriptions from the officers present survive, none of them word-for-word identical to the others. Warren's decision caused immediate friction with other police officials who considered the graffito a potentially crucial clue, and it remains, a hundred and thirty years later, one of the most-cited examples of possibly irreversible loss of evidence in the history of British criminal investigation.

◐ SIGNIFICADO AÚN DISPUTADO◐ MEANING STILL DISPUTED

Not even the exact spelling of the key word — "Juwes" — has a consensus explanation: it has been proposed as a dialectal variant of "Jews," a Masonic term, or simply the author's own spelling error. With the original message destroyed and only divergent police transcriptions as evidence, any definitive interpretation of its meaning is, honestly, reasoned speculation, not established fact.

El memorando de Macnaghten y tres nombres que nunca se confirmaronThe Macnaghten memorandum and three names that were never confirmed

The most-cited police document on possible suspects is the confidential memorandum Sir Melville Macnaghten wrote in 1894, six years after the crimes, with the explicit aim of publicly ruling out Thomas Cutbush as the Ripper. In that text, Macnaghten names three men police considered "more likely" suspects than Cutbush: Montague John Druitt, a lawyer and teacher whose body was found in the River Thames in December 1888, probably by suicide, after losing his job; Aaron Kosminski, a Polish Jewish immigrant living in Whitechapel, described in the memorandum as a man with "great hatred of women" and strong "homicidal tendencies," committed to a mental asylum around March 1889; and Michael Ostrog, a Russian doctor and con man with a criminal record, for whom later investigations have found no real connection to the murders beyond fraud and theft.

Francis Tumblety, an American medical quack who drew Scotland Yard's attention at the time for his pronounced misogyny and his private collection of preserved human wombs — a real, documented detail from his own biographer, which by itself proves no connection to the crimes — is usually added to that list. None of these four men was ever formally charged, and Macnaghten himself acknowledged in his memorandum that he was writing from memory, years after the events, without full access to the case's original files.

A businessman, a geneticist, and a scientific community that said "not so fast"

In 2007, amateur writer Russell Edwards bought at auction a silk shawl that, according to an undocumented family tradition with no police report from the time to back it, had belonged to Catherine Eddowes the night of her murder. Edwards commissioned geneticist Jari Louhelainen, of Liverpool John Moores University, to analyze stains on the fabric for mitochondrial DNA — the kind inherited only through the maternal line. In 2014, Edwards published the book "Naming Jack the Ripper," claiming the DNA found matched a living descendant of Eddowes and, in another stain, a living descendant of Aaron Kosminski, naming him as the killer. The study's technical data wasn't published in a peer-reviewed journal until 2019, in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, authored by Louhelainen and geneticist David Miller of the University of Leeds.

The scientific community's reaction, after the 2019 publication, was overwhelmingly damning. Kim Rossmo, a criminal justice professor at Texas State University, called the study an "investigative failure," pointing to reasoning errors like tunnel vision, confirmation bias, and unreported error rates. Archaeological geneticists cited by Forbes and the Genetic Literacy Project described the work as "terrible science" and "unpublishable." The shawl itself lacks a documented chain of custody reliably linking it to the 1888 crime scene — it appears in no police or court report from the period — and archaeogeneticist Adam Rutherford noted that the way the fabric has been handled since its discovery makes any DNA analysis, in his words, "cripplingly problematic." Louhelainen himself went on to acknowledge that the evidence "wouldn't be conclusive in a modern court."

✕ EL CASO NO ESTÁ CERRADO✕ THE CASE IS NOT CLOSED

Despite headlines in 2014 and 2019 announcing the Ripper's identity had been "finally solved," the subsequent scientific review of the shawl study itself — unverified provenance, broken chain of custody, and methodology questioned by independent specialists — means that, with the evidence available today, Jack the Ripper's identity remains, formally, unknown.

Amid the autumn 1888 panic, the murder investigation crossed paths, unexpectedly, with another file in this same archive: just weeks before the first canonical crime, American actor Richard Mansfield had opened his stage adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" at London's Lyceum Theatre, with an on-stage transformation so convincing it caused audience members to faint. In October 1888, the City of London Police received an anonymous letter directly naming Mansfield as a suspect, reasoning that only someone capable of embodying that monstrous duality so realistically could also be capable of committing it in real life.

Mansfield was never arrested or formally investigated, but public suspicion was enough to force the play's early closure in London. The episode illustrates, better than almost any other detail of the case, just how much Whitechapel's real terror and Victorian gothic fiction fed off each other in the public imagination of 1888 — the very city that packed the Lyceum night after night to be frightened by a fictional monster was desperately searching for a real face to pin the horror unfolding just a few streets away onto.

Jack the Ripper remains, a hundred and thirty-eight years later, one of the most studied unsolved criminal files in modern history — and, precisely for that reason, one of the most vulnerable to premature solutions. Every decade has produced its own "case closed": a favorite suspect, a reinterpreted letter, a forensic study with the appearance of finality. None has survived intact the later scrutiny of historians, criminologists, or — in the most recent case — independent geneticists.

What does remain stable, however, is the case's own pattern: physical evidence destroyed or poorly preserved from day one — the erased graffito, the shawl with no chain of custody — communications of genuinely unverifiable authorship, and a suspect list built more on plausible psychological profiles than on direct forensic evidence. It is, perhaps, the purest example of a mystery that resists solution not for lack of theories, but for an excess of them.
