New Name for UFOs and What the Data Say

Since 2022, the Pentagon and NASA speak of “unidentified anomalous phenomena” instead of UFOs. The new label promises rigor and leaves one question open: what is behind it. This file follows the history of the term, the legal definition, NASA’s report, the official figures, and the resolved cases, and puts to the test the five characteristics attributed to it.

De «platillo volante» a OVNI y de OVNI a FANIFrom “flying saucer” to UFO and from UFO to UAP

On June 24, 1947, civilian pilot Kenneth Arnold said he had seen nine shining objects near Mount Rainier; the press called them “flying saucers” and the name stuck. The US Air Force opened successive investigations — Sign (1948), Grudge (1949), and Blue Book (1952–1969) — and it was Captain Edward Ruppelt, head of Blue Book, who popularized the acronym UFO to replace “saucer” with a less loaded term. Blue Book was closed in December 1969, after the Condon Report (1968), with 12,618 cases catalogued and 701 left unidentified; the official conclusion was that nothing indicated a threat or extraterrestrial technology.

The renaming, then, is not new: every generation has tried to clean up the label. France has spoken for decades of “PAN” (unidentified aerospace phenomena) through the CNES body created in 1977 (today GEIPAN). In the United States, the Pentagon program AATIP (2007–2012), the 2017 press coverage, and the three Navy videos that the Department of Defense itself confirmed as authentic in April 2020 reopened the matter under a different acronym: UAP.

◐ MATIZ A LA PREMISA: «FANI» NO LO ACUÑARON LA NASA NI EL PENTÁGONO◐ CAVEAT ON THE PREMISE: NASA AND THE PENTAGON DID NOT COIN “FANI”

US institutions speak of UAP, in English. “FANI” (Fenómenos Anómalos No Identificados) is the Spanish rendering used by the press and popularizers; we did not find it as an official NASA or Pentagon term. And “replacing” UFO is relative: official documents use UAP, but “UFO” remains alive in everyday language and even in the agencies’ own historical record.

«Aéreo» pasa a «anómalo» y aparece lo transmedio“Aerial” becomes “anomalous” and the transmedium appears

Until 2022, the official US acronym stood for “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.” The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO, created in July 2022 within the Pentagon) and the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2023 swapped “aerial” for “anomalous” and set a legal definition with three components: airborne objects not immediately identifiable; “transmedium” objects or devices, that is, able to move from one medium to another (air, space, water); and submerged objects not immediately identifiable that display behaviors suggesting a relation to the first two.

✔ DATO VERIFICADO: LA DEFINICIÓN TRANSMEDIO ESTÁ EN LA LEY✔ VERIFIED FACT: THE TRANSMEDIUM DEFINITION IS IN THE LAW

Including the underwater domain and movement between media is the reason the Administration itself gave for changing “aerial” to “anomalous”: widening the scope. That the additional aim was reducing stigma is on record in NASA and AARO communications, but it is not what formally justified the change of word. The definition was later codified in federal law (50 U.S.C. § 3373); we could not open the consolidated text and cite its content from secondary sources.

In June 2022 NASA set up an independent team of 16 experts, chaired by astrophysicist David Spergel, to study how to analyze UAP scientifically in unclassified data. Its report was published on September 14, 2023. It defines UAP as observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena, and reaches an unspectacular conclusion: high-quality data are missing. The available cases come from sensors not calibrated for this purpose, with incomplete records, so they allow neither confirming nor ruling out anything rigorously.

The team found no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial in origin, and recommended using calibration data, artificial intelligence, and citizen science, as well as reducing stigma so that pilots and operators report without fear of ridicule. NASA later appointed a director of UAP research. This is the verifiable origin of the “scientific and neutral perspective” trait: it is not a thesis about what the phenomena are, but a method for beginning to measure them.

Los UAP se definen como observaciones de eventos en el cielo que no pueden identificarse como aeronaves o fenómenos naturales conocidos, desde una perspectiva científica.UAP are defined as observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena—from a scientific perspective.

Qué significa realmente «sin explicar»What “unexplained” really means

Official figures are the best vaccine against headlines. In June 2021, the preliminary report of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) gathered 144 reports from US military personnel between 2004 and 2021: 143 remained unexplained and one was attributed to a deflating balloon. “Unexplained” does not mean “inexplicable”: the report itself blames mostly the scarcity of data. In 18 incidents observers described unusual flight characteristics, but the report warns these could stem from sensor errors.

Among the cases that get resolved, the overwhelming majority turn out to be balloons, birds, drones, and known orbital objects. In March 2024, the first volume of its historical report concluded that there is no evidence of programs recovering extraterrestrial technology and that many earlier claims stem from circular testimony or misidentifications.

We could not open the Wired article that carries it and did not find that figure in a primary source. Two checkable points: NASA does not keep its own case database (cases are gathered by AARO, at the Pentagon), and the closest documented figure is AARO’s 757 new reports in its 2023–2024 period. That the headline blends both institutions is our inference; we cannot confirm it.

Nimitz, Go Fast y lo que significa «auténtico»Nimitz, Go Fast, and what “authentic” means

The most cited case is the USS Nimitz fleet in November 2004 (the “Tic Tac” object described by pilot David Fravor), together with the videos FLIR1 (2004), Gimbal, and Go Fast (2015). What the Navy confirmed in 2020 is that the videos are authentic and were not meant to be public; it did not confirm that they show unknown technology. “Authentic” describes the file, not the nature of the object.

Go Fast is the example of how a case gets resolved. According to the analysis AARO published in 2024, the object was moving slowly at about 13,000 feet, near the surface, and the impression of great speed was a parallax effect: the aircraft’s motion against a distant background. That is the office’s conclusion; third parties had earlier proposed a similar explanation, and there is no equivalent public rebuttal for Nimitz.

Then there are witness claims. In July 2023, former intelligence officer David Grusch told a House committee that the US held programs recovering objects and “non-human biologics.” He spoke of what others had told him, presented no public evidence, and the Pentagon and AARO have denied it.

Lotes de documentos y lo que aún no sabemosBatches of documents and what we still do not know

In 2026 the Pentagon opened a public portal for declassified UAP material under the name PURSUE, released in successive batches. According to the specialist and defense press we were able to consult (DefenseScoop, The Debrief, and others), the fifth batch came out on August 7, 2026, and by October 23, 2026 a seventh had been published. The news item cited in the material provided for this file (El Confidencial, August 13, 2026) covers that fifth batch.

We could not open the official portal (war.gov), nor the articles from Wired España, El Confidencial, or Newtral. We therefore do not describe what each batch contains or what the headline’s “three extraordinary anomalies” are: that would be making it up. What we can say is that publishing material is not the same as explaining it; a declassified file shows what was recorded, not what it was.

Cuáles resisten la comprobación y cuáles noWhich ones hold up and which ones do not

The source text lists five characteristics of UAP. We check them one by one against primary sources or the best secondary source available. The outcome is uneven: two describe the official definition well, and two present as fact what is only a possibility.

✔ 1 · NATURALEZA TRANSMEDIO — CORRECTO COMO DEFINICIÓN✔ 1 · TRANSMEDIUM NATURE — CORRECT AS A DEFINITION

The law includes transmedium objects as a category. But it is a category that is defined, not a phenomenon that has been documented: there is no confirmed public case of an object crossing air and water. It is a working hypothesis by the lawmakers.

◐ 2 · PERSPECTIVA CIENTÍFICA Y NEUTRAL — PARCIAL◐ 2 · SCIENTIFIC AND NEUTRAL PERSPECTIVE — PARTIAL

True of the method (NASA) and of the declared aim of reducing stigma. But neutrality is an aspiration: part of the political debate still uses “non-human intelligence,” and the very word “anomaly” presupposes knowing what would be normal.

Speaking of “phenomena” rather than “objects” does widen the field to lights or events in the sky; NASA’s definition speaks of “events.” But “anomalous sounds” and “energy emissions” do not appear in the legal definition we could check; they are examples added by the text.

✕ 4 · DESAFÍO A LAS LEYES FÍSICAS — NO SOSTENIDO POR LAS FUENTES✕ 4 · DEFYING PHYSICAL LAWS — NOT SUPPORTED BY THE SOURCES

No official source says any case violates physics. ODNI 2021 speaks of “apparent” characteristics in 18 incidents and warns of possible sensor errors; NASA found no evidence of anything extraordinary; and Go Fast shows how an apparent acceleration can be parallax. Presenting abrupt turns without wings or propulsion as a defining trait of UAP moves from testimony to fact.

◐ 5 · ORIGEN INICIALMENTE DESCONOCIDO — CIERTO, PERO POR FALTA DE DATOS◐ 5 · INITIALLY UNKNOWN ORIGIN — TRUE, BUT BECAUSE OF MISSING DATA

The text says “after rigorous instrumental analysis.” The official reports say the opposite: many unresolved cases are unresolved because there is not enough data to analyze them. “Unidentified” describes the state of the file, not a proven enigma.

Una traducción, y unos archivos que ya eran públicosA translation, and archives that were already public

Spain has a place of its own in this story. The Spanish Air Force was among the first in the world to open its sighting archives: from 1992 and in successive batches it declassified files, which are now held by the Air Force Historical Archive and can be consulted by anyone. We do not give the exact number of cases or pages here because we could not check it against the Ministry of Defense source.

In Spanish, the press has adopted “FANI” when translating UAP. It is worth knowing what one is reading: when a headline says “NASA has coined FANI,” most likely someone has translated a US acronym; no Spanish body has defined it. The term is useful for a simple reason: it lets one talk about the unidentified without promising what lies behind it.

✦ ✦ ✦

Un nombre nuevo para una pregunta viejaA new name for an old question

Changing the name does not change the data. “Unidentified anomalous phenomenon” is better than “flying saucer” because it does not promise craft, but it inherits the same problem: a few unusual observations, poorly recorded, with a great deal of expectation piled on top. What has really changed since 2020 is not the mystery but the procedure: there is an office, a legal definition, annual reports, a NASA study, and, in 2026, files released in batches.

The position that best withstands checking is uncomfortable for both camps: there is no public evidence of extraterrestrial origin, and there is no explanation for every case either. If one day a well-calibrated data point turns up that fits nothing known, it will be the first UAP in the strict sense. Until then, the label describes an information gap, not a phenomenon.
