Criptoterrestres y el Reino de Mu Cryptoterrestrials and the Kingdom of Mu

The hypothesis that joins an invented Pacific continent, the objects the US Navy cannot identify, and a 2024 academic article its own authors disassociate from Harvard. Here, fact, hypothesis and myth are pulled apart.

No parecen dioses interestelares. There is a question classic ufology never fully resolved: if the alleged visitors are advanced enough to cross light-years, why do they behave like a repertory theatre company? They appear, vanish, abduct, mutilate cattle, leave circles, let themselves be filmed halfway and, above all, look far too much like us. Big heads, black eyes, fragile bodies. They do not look like interstellar gods. They look like a human caricature someone has been rehearsing for millennia.

Mac Tonnies gave that suspicion a name: cryptoterrestrials. His book on the subject was published in 2010, a year after his death. They would not come from another planet. They would be a sister species, native to Earth, hidden in the margins — underground, under the sea, perhaps among us — that has spent centuries disguising itself as an alien. In 2024 an article by Tim Lomas and Brendan Case — then affiliated with Harvard, although the text itself states it is not associated with that program — and Michael P. Masters of Montana Technological University brought the idea back into an academic frame. And in the folklore of lost civilizations that sister species already had a homeland: Mu, the continent James Churchward placed in the Pacific and which, he claimed, sank some twelve thousand years ago.

This file does not set out to prove that Mu existed or that a civilization lies beneath the seabed. It aims at something more useful: reconstructing how the myth was manufactured, which real data points have been glued onto it — sonar contacts, underwater formations, the Nimitz “Tic Tac” — where the evidence ends and the narrative begins, and why that narrative remains so persistent.

Su manuscrito The Cryptoterrestrials: A Meditation on Indigenous Humanoids and the Aliens Among Us lo publicó Anomalist Books en 2010, con prólogo de Nick Redfern.Mac Tonnies (1975-2009) was not a field investigator. He was an essayist and blogger from Independence, Missouri, author of an earlier book on Martian anomalies (After the Martian Apocalypse, 2004). He died of a cardiac arrhythmia at 34. His manuscript The Cryptoterrestrials: A Meditation on Indigenous Humanoids and the Aliens Among Us was published by Anomalist Books in 2010, with a foreword by Nick Redfern.

The subtitle itself gives fair warning: this is not an empirical monograph, it is a meditation. What Tonnies does is point out a hole in the extraterrestrial hypothesis and propose a different reading of the same accounts. His argument fits in three moves. First: UFO occupants do not behave like interstellar explorers but like neighbors. Second: European folklore of “little people”, fairies, goblins and abductions to the otherworld resembles modern abduction narratives too closely to dismiss the kinship. Third: a terrestrial humanoid species, numerically inferior but with enough technology to hide, would have reasons to let humanity mistake it for gods from the sky.

Rather I’m asking if it’s feasible that the alleged aliens that occupy historical and contemporary mythology are flesh-and-blood human-like creatures that live right here on Earth.

No otra dimensión. Otra ecología.Tonnies set his hypothesis apart from that of Jacques Vallée and John Keel, who spoke of “ultraterrestrials”: intelligences operating from another layer of reality. He wanted something more prosaic and, in his view, more testable: flesh and blood, right here, beneath our feet. Not another dimension. Another ecology.

The idea, moreover, did not begin with him. In 1945 Richard Shaver filled Amazing Stories with underground dwellers from a remote past; Raymond Bernard published Flying Saucers from the Earth’s Interior in 1960, and Keel argued decades earlier that a hypothesis of this kind was more reasonable than the extraterrestrial one. What Tonnies did was clean up the language, strip it of Hollow Earth and pulp mythology, and return it to a biological question: is it feasible that a sister species has survived in niches we do not occupy?

Lo que dice y lo que no diceWhat it says and what it does not

En junio de 2024, la revista Philosophy and Cosmology publicó “The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Case for Scientific Openness to a Concealed Earthly Explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” (vol. In June 2024 the journal Philosophy and Cosmology published “The Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis: A Case for Scientific Openness to a Concealed Earthly Explanation for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena” (vol. 33, pp. 67-122), signed by Tim Lomas and Brendan Case — both then at Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program — and by Michael P. Masters, a biological anthropologist at Montana Technological University, known for his “extratempestrial” hypothesis (visitors from the human future).

The article opens with a disclaimer that the press mostly trimmed: the authors warn that it is a speculative piece reflecting their own interests and ideas, that it is not associated with Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program, and that they regard the hypothesis as “in all likelihood false”, though worthy of investigation. The “Harvard study” headline was therefore the media’s simplification, not a claim of the text.

That jump from 1 % to 10 % is a stated hunch, not the output of a published Bayesian model. A critical review in The Skeptic (UK, August 2024) faulted it precisely for offering no documentation to justify the increase. The figure is best treated for what it is: the confession of a change of mood, not a datum.

What is useful in the article is not the figure but the range of scenarios it puts on the table. To organize them it cites the taxonomy of Colonel Karl Nell, who distinguishes four cryptoterrestrial variants, and it also makes room for bolder speculations — from an evolved “dinosauroid” to a reptilian origin — which critics have faulted it for taking seriously.

The first category is the one that connects with the imagery of Mu, Atlantis and Lemuria: a mother culture sinks, a remnant hides, and centuries later its vehicles are mistaken for spacecraft. None of the academic sources cited in this file claims that Mu existed. What the article argues is more modest: if one takes transmedium UAP seriously — objects entering and leaving water without a noticeable wake or splash — a hidden terrestrial explanation stops being a fanzine whim and becomes a working hypothesis, however improbable.

Criticism was not slow to arrive. Aaron John Gulyas, a historian of conspiracy theories, had described Tonnies’s hypothesis as “really more of a thought experiment designed to raise questions”. It remains, plainly, the most accurate thing that can be said about it.

Cómo se inventó MuHow Mu was invented

Mu is not an indigenous Pacific tradition. It is a nineteenth-century literary artifact that dressed itself up as archaeology.

The name appears when Abbé Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg, in 1864, misreads the Troano Codex — today the Madrid Codex — and believes he sees in Maya glyphs a reference to a land submerged by catastrophe. Augustus Le Plongeon, a photographer and amateur explorer of Yucatán, takes up that reading, identifies “the land of Mu” with a continent older than Egypt, and claims the Maya descend from its refugees; he published Queen Móo and the Egyptian Sphinx in 1896. The Mayanist academy of his day gave him no credit.

James Churchward (1851-1936), a British-American engineer and inventor, revives the idea and inflates it into an epic. In The Lost Continent of Mu: Motherland of Man (1926) and its sequels, Mu is a continent of roughly 5,000 by 3,000 miles — from the Marianas to Easter Island — inhabited by 64 million people and divided into seven great cities. Churchward claimed to have read its history on “Naacal” tablets shown to him by a priest in India. Those tablets were never exhibited, never verifiably photographed, and never deposited in a museum.

According to Churchward, Mu sank “in almost a single night”: chambers of explosive gas beneath the granite bed detonated, the continent split and fell into an abyss of fire. Its colonies — Egypt, India, Babylon, the Maya — would have been the remnant. Not one of these claims is supported by verifiable evidence.

A continent does not sink in one night. Continental crust is lighter than oceanic crust and floats on it like an iceberg. Plate tectonics, consolidated from the 1960s and 1970s, describes a Pacific floor that is generated at ridges and recycled in trenches. There is no vanished continental slab beneath Hawaii: the islands of the Pacific are overwhelmingly volcanic edifices. Easter Island, Churchward’s favorite example, was settled centuries ago and shows no trace of a neighboring landmass that broke away within human time.

Patrick Nunn, who devoted an entire book to the vanished islands of the Pacific (Vanished Islands and Hidden Continents of the Pacific, University of Hawai’i Press, 2009), takes oceanic myths of sunken lands seriously — because many islands did sink on a local scale, through volcanic subsidence or post-glacial sea-level rise — and at the same time rules out a mother continent. There is an enormous difference between “an island the sea ate” and “an empire the size of South America that evaporated on a Tuesday”.

✕ NIVEL DE EVIDENCIA: DESCARTADO✕ EVIDENCE LEVEL: RULED OUT

That closes the geological file on a continental Mu. It does not close the cultural file: Mu, like Plato’s Atlantis read literally, works better as an origin myth than as paleogeography.

If Mu needs a ruin, Yonaguni has lent it one for decades. In 1986 the diver Kihachiro Aratake found off the Japanese island of Yonaguni — the westernmost of the Ryukyu archipelago, a little over a hundred kilometers from Taiwan — a sandstone formation with terraces, right angles and what the human eye insists on reading as staircases.

Masaaki Kimura, of the University of the Ryukyus, argued for years that it was a megalithic city more than ten thousand years old; he later lowered the dating to 2,000-3,000 years. In the late 1990s he published a book linking the find to the continent of Mu, and what he interpreted as a castle, a stadium and roads entered the repertoire of Graham Hancock and of ancient-civilization documentaries.

Geologist Robert Schoch of Boston University dived the site and concluded the opposite: the mass is bedrock, not blocks brought from elsewhere, and the “stairs” are bedding planes and joints in a sandstone fractured by earthquakes. Neither Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs nor Okinawa Prefecture recognizes the formations as significant cultural artifacts, and neither has funded research or preservation.

There is a nuance skeptics sometimes forget and believers sometimes inflate. During the Last Glacial Maximum sea level stood more than a hundred meters below today’s, so Yonaguni, or part of it, was above water. That a late-Pleistocene coastal culture might have touched up a natural formation is not impossible. That the formation is the capital of a continental empire of 64 million inhabitants is a leap of category. The first is difficult archaeology. The second is Churchward in a diving suit.

⚠ NIVEL DE EVIDENCIA: FORMACIÓN REAL, CIUDAD NO DEMOSTRADA⚠ EVIDENCE LEVEL: REAL FORMATION, CITY NOT DEMONSTRATED

The terraces exist. Human intervention is a minority, disputed hypothesis. The megalithic city is not demonstrated, and the link to Mu exists only in the interpretation of those who start from Mu in order to read the rock.

Here the file changes register. We leave the nineteenth-century myth and enter military documentation.

On 14 November 2004, some 160 kilometers off San Diego, pilots from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz intercepted a white, oblong object roughly the size of a fighter jet, with no visible wings or plume. Commander David Fravor described it as a “Tic Tac”. The radar of the cruiser USS Princeton had been tracking anomalous contacts in the area for days. According to the testimonies, the object seemed associated with a circular disturbance on the water surface — “whitewater” — as if something lay beneath. An infrared video of the encounter was made public in 2017, together with the New York Times report that exposed the Pentagon’s AATIP program; in April 2020 the Department of Defense officially released the three videos. Fravor testified before the US Congress in 2023. The case does not “prove Mu”. It proves, at minimum, that the Navy filmed something it has not convincingly identified over the eastern Pacific, and that several witnesses linked it to the water.

On 15 July 2019, more than a hundred miles west of San Diego, the crew of the USS Omaha, a littoral combat ship, recorded with an infrared sensor a sphere that accompanied the ship for a while and ended up entering the water. On the audio a sailor can be heard exclaiming that it “splashed”. The recording was released by Jeremy Corbell and Mystery Wire: it is material leaked by third parties, not an officially declassified document, and there are no remains or identification of the object. Retired Rear Admiral Timothy Gallaudet, a former Navy oceanographer, has argued that the UAP problem also has an undersea dimension — USOs, unidentified submerged objects — and that the ocean, rather than the sky, may be the main archive.

There is an earlier case, more often cited in ufological circles than verified in primary sources. In February 1987 the New Zealand frigate HMNZS Southland reportedly detected on sonar, some 175 nautical miles northeast of the tip of the North Island, an object with no propeller noise, about 245 meters long and about 45 wide — larger than the largest known submarine, the Soviet Typhoon class — that allegedly closed a distance of some 20 kilometers in 25 to 30 seconds, after which the frigate lost all power. Physicist Kevin Knuth has circulated the analysis, which yields underwater speeds on the order of thousands of kilometers per hour.

The Southland figures come from witness accounts and the analysis circulated by Knuth; we have not located their publication in a peer-reviewed journal. If the numbers hold, the speed involved would be incompatible with any known submarine. That is a big “if”. The case belongs on the shelf of serious but unresolved cases, not on the shelf of proof.

What can be stated is the geographic pattern: a disproportionate share of this century’s best-documented military UAP occurs over water, and part of them are transmedium. The ocean covers 71 % of the planet and we have mapped only a ridiculous fraction of its floor in detail. That does not license populating the trenches with Naacals. It licenses saying that, were there an intelligence that wished to hide, the sea is a better hiding place than space.

The alternative narrative sews these threads together with three stitches. It is speculation, and it is flagged as such.

Primera puntada: supervivencia. First stitch: survival. If a coastal Pacific culture — not a continent the size of South America but something more modest: an archipelago, a thalassocracy — had been swept away by sea-level rise at the end of the Pleistocene, its human remnants need not have gone extinct. They could have sought caves, high islands or, in the technological version of the myth, dwelling beneath the seabed itself. Churchward needs an empire. The “ancient survival” variant needs only a remnant.

Segunda puntada: camuflaje. Second stitch: camouflage. Tonnies insists that the “greys” look like a costume: too human to be alien, too strange to be neighbors. A species with millennia of technological advantage and millennia of demographic disadvantage would have a clear incentive: that we take them for visitors. The sky is a stage. The basement is the dressing room.

Third stitch: the USOs. If vehicles emerge from the water in the Pacific, the geography of the myth and the geography of the reports overlap enough for the narrative to feed itself. Yonaguni lies in the same ocean. So does the Tic Tac.

Popular culture had imagined that coincidence long before. Atragon (Ishirō Honda, Toho, 1963, based on texts by Shunrō Oshikawa and Shigeru Komatsuzaki) pits the Gotengo, a submarine battleship, against the Empire of Mu: a civilization that survived under the sea, sustained by an artificial geothermal “sun”, ruled by an empress and guarded by the sea serpent Manda. Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya were not doing ufology: they were making Cold War cinema in exotic costume. But the film is the best visual summary in existence of the thesis this file dissects: the enemy does not come from Andromeda. It comes from below.

There are three serious pieces that supporters of the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis tend to mix in with Mu, and they deserve to be separated.

The first is the Silurian hypothesis of Gavin Schmidt (NASA GISS) and Adam Frank (University of Rochester), published in 2018 in the International Journal of Astrobiology. It does not claim that an industrial civilization existed before Homo sapiens: it asks whether, had one existed tens of millions of years ago, we would detect it. Its answer is uncomfortable: probably not through artifacts, perhaps through chemical signatures in the strata — carbon and nitrogen isotopes, plutonium-244, spheroidal combustion particles. The name “Silurian” comes from a television series, not the geological period. It is an astrobiology thought experiment, not an endorsement of Churchward.

The second is the incompleteness of the record. Göbekli Tepe forced monumental architecture to be pushed back to about 11,000 years ago. The fossil record of extinct primates is fragmentary. A large part of the ocean floor remains unmapped at useful resolution. None of those gaps demonstrates a hidden civilization. All of them prevent “we would have seen it by now” from serving as a terminal argument.

The third is the military UAP phenomenon itself. One need not believe in Naacals to admit that the Tic Tac, the Omaha and a series of transmedium contacts have no satisfactory public explanation. The debate over their origin remains open: the documentary The Age of Disclosure (2025) has one of its interviewees suggest that the “non-human” intelligence might not be exclusively extraterrestrial but “some sort of crypto-terrestrial”, while Luis Elizondo, former head of the AATIP program, argues in it that we were discovered by an intelligence from another part of the universe. Two incompatible readings coexist in the same film.

A hypothesis worthy of respect is put against the ropes. These are the objections of substance.

CINCO OBJECIONESFIVE OBJECTIONS
No genome. If a sister species or a human remnant isolated for millennia existed, contemporary forensic biology — environmental DNA in caves, marine sediments, ice — should have left at least a debatable trace. It has not.
No submarine archaeology of an empire. Yonaguni is a formation; Bimini poses a similar dilemma. Derinkuyu, in Cappadocia, is a real, human, impressive underground city, but it only shows that Homo sapiens knows how to hide underground, not that a civilization with transmedium vehicles did so.
The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis inherits the problem of the extraterrestrial one and adds another. If these beings are so advanced, why the theatre? Tonnies answers that the theatre is the point; a skeptic answers that theatre is what one expects from a cultural phenomenon, not from a species. Both answers are coherent; only one has parsimony.
Churchward was wrong, or lied, about almost everything checkable: the Naacal language, the invisible tablets, the impossible continent. Building a contemporary theory on that foundation is like raising an observatory on a Hollywood set. The myth can be used as metaphor; not as a primary source.
The Earth is not hollow. Agartha, inner Shambhala and Admiral Byrd’s apocryphal diary belong to another shelf: that of theosophical literature and Hollow Earth. Mixing them with Tonnies’s hypothesis does it a disservice. Tonnies wanted caves, trenches and biology, not an inner sun.
✦ ✦ ✦

Qué queda, cuando se retira el decoradoWhat remains when the scenery is removed

With Churchward removed, Hollow Earth removed, and the “Harvard 10 %” removed as though it were a datum, a leaner and more interesting remainder is left.

What remains is a barely read ocean where the navies of more than one country have filmed or sounded objects they cannot classify. A biological hypothesis — a species or remnant culture, terrestrial, furtive — that does not violate the physics of interstellar travel because it does not need it. A persistent folklore, from Robert Kirk’s fairies in The Secret Commonwealth (1691) to the greys of abduction accounts, which Tonnies and Vallée read as the same play in different costume. And an invented continent that, precisely because it is invented, reveals what we want to be true: that we are not alone, that the catastrophe has already happened, that the survivors watch us from below, and that the sky was a useful lie.

Caos y Destino does not close the case. It does close the confusion of genres. Mu is a Victorian myth built on a misreading of a Maya codex. Cryptoterrestrials are a 2010 thought experiment recovered by a speculative 2024 article. The Pacific USOs are an empirical problem of the Navy. The three have been welded into a single story because the weld is beautiful. Beauty is not a method.

If tomorrow a sonar on an attack submarine, or an autonomous vehicle mapping the Mariana Trench, returned a signature that fits no catalog, the debate would change shelves. Until then, the most rigorous sentence that can be written is also the least cinematic: we do not know what enters and leaves the Pacific. We know, with reasonable certainty, that it is not the fleet of a continent that was never there.

✕ NOTA EDITORIAL✕ EDITORIAL NOTE

This file distinguishes three registers: documented fact, published hypothesis and myth. Where it enters the narrative stitching between Mu and the cryptoterrestrials, it does so explicitly and as speculation. None of the academic sources cited affirms the existence of the continent of Mu. The final judgment, as always in this archive, belongs to the reader.
